Ranch construction in Powell County usually puts the ductwork in a crawlspace, in insulated flexible duct rather than sheet metal. Flex is cheap, fast to install and perfectly adequate when it is supported properly - and it is very often not supported properly, so it sags between straps, kinks at the turns, and loses airflow to compression nobody ever measures.

It is also the material most vulnerable to rodents. A crawlspace is a warm, sheltered run, and the outer jacket of flex duct is easy to open. Once the inner liner is breached you are drawing crawlspace air into the supply side, which is a real problem rather than an aesthetic one.

Cleaning flex duct without wrecking it

Flex duct cannot take the same treatment as rigid metal. The inner liner is a thin plastic film over a wire helix, and an aggressive rotary brush will tear it - at which point you have turned a cleaning job into a replacement job. We use softer air-whip methods on flex and lower pressure, and where a run is already compromised we will tell you plainly that replacing that section is better value than cleaning it.

Honestly, in a lot of crawlspace systems, replacement of the worst sections plus proper strapping does more for airflow and air quality than a full clean would. If that is what we find, that is what we will tell you, even though it is work we do not do ourselves.
